A Lesson from One of My Students.
Sometimes, communication isn’t about words at all.
It’s about a feeling.
My yoga teachers have taught me many truths that my students remind me of daily. One of those truths is “when you start feeling, your thinking will change.”
There is a man who comes to my yoga classes. He is a man of very few words but always lets his actions speak. I LOVE having him in the room. He shows up bravely consistently, and he goes for it with both strength and gentleness.
Earlier this year, I walked up to him before class and asked, “What’s new?” He looked at me, shook his head, and said, “nothing.”
I watched him practice that day. I just coached the class through the challenge, where we get breathless and then immediately sit in meditation. We stayed for about 5 minutes.
But not this man; he stayed extra time. The rest of the class was moving into a new place, and he was sitting still with total presence and quiet passion.
He came after class that day and said, “ I have an answer to your question now!”
I asked him to tell me while I looked at him smiling, and he said, “PERSPECTIVE.”
Then he thanked me.
But it’s him we must all thank.
What a gift to see! This example of a person who is willing to unlearn the lie that feeling is a weakness and instead chooses to become emotionally available.
I’ll never forget him. Or this story.
I hope it moves you too.
